The Pharisees were outwardly righteous but inwardly corrupt, and their hypocrisy led others astray.  Jesus warns us to beware of this type of behavior because it can subtly influence our hearts and minds, leading us to become more concerned with outward appearances than true integrity and sincerity before God.
