There is a barrier between God and us.  That barrier is simply labeled pride.  It’s an exaggerated sense of self-importance, of self-value, and a diminished appreciation for God. So, what can be done about it?  The answer is through the spirit of God, as we cry out to Him in a greater sense of self-awareness.  As we see these things in our lives, He gives us the tool to hate the fact that the wall is there, and to tear it down.  It becomes a daily destruction on our part.  Pride is our enemy; it's a manifestation of evil.  God has shown us more for what it is, and He encourages us to fight against it.
